Blog post 8: The final Reflection

This project as a whole was a very intriguing one. I had never actually read A Christmas Carol before and I actually really enjoyed the story. Reading it critically and connecting it to the time period in which it was written gave me a greater appreciation of the work. I had also never seen the film “Scrooged” before, so it was interesting to have my first look at the movie be directly after reading the story. Having the original fresh in my mind made it easier for me to connect the two pieces together and further analyze them both. I thought that the modern twist on the original story was rather well composed, having the original happen as the rework panned out. There were many small story telling elements that were used in the film that really assisted with the story itself. For example, when the film begins Bill is wearing a completely black suit. As the events that make him reevaluate his life play out, his attire gets lighter and lighter, and at one point somebody actually mentions that he is wearing a blue suit. Both mediums were very well thought out and put together. For my inquiry four, I chose to do an animation. This is because of my interest in film and video making. While i enjoy pinterest as much as the next guy, animation has always been an interest of mine starting with stop motion claymation as a young boy. In doing this project, I gained a greater appreciation for animators, as i see it is a long and tedious process just for the most simple of movements to look good. I am pleased that I now have the ability to animate and may even continue to do so as a hobby. I am not entirely happy with how my project came out. My paper and speech was fine, but due to the confusing and tedious nature of animation, I found it difficult to produce a product up to my standards. If I could go back and redo it, I would spend more time on my animation and really get a good one made. I truly have enjoyed this class and am grateful that i had the chance to attend.

I have decided to make a video for my presentation. I have always been interested in animation and film making, in fact, I attended Butler Tech for a year for digital media production. As much as it pains me, I will include links to my old youtube accounts. I chose to use moviestorm because it seems like the most effective animating tool with somewhat easy use. I am not a practiced animator, however when I was younger, I would make clay animations at home.

I was inspired to do this by watching Robert Benfer’s klay world. It was very stupid basic humor, but God do I love that. I am not sure exactly what I will do for my video, but I do know it will be Christmas themed.

I have chosen to write my paper on the film and book pairing of Scrooged and “A Christmas Carol”. Growing up, I always heard this story, but really only had a vague understanding of the original text. If you are unfamiliar as I was, allow me to offer you a summary. The story of Scrooge is one for the pages. He spent most of his older life being grumpy and hateful, always keeping every penny he could get his hands on. Then one night on Christmas Eve, the ghost of a former colleague visits him in the night. He warns him of the coming three more ghosts. They visit in order, the spirits of Christmas past present and future. Upon meeting all of the spirits, he makes a decision to no longer be a miserable human and to start enjoying life. This original text was published in 1843, which wasn’t a very exciting year, as i remember, but the text really spiced up the holidays. The film from my pairing is, a movie starring Bill Murray, called Scrooged. It was published in 1988, right around Christmas time. To be honest, i hate the cover picture for the film, Bill is wearing too much eye liner and he ended up looking like a scary painting. Other than that, the movie was rather intriguing, creating a semi modern take on the original story. It is meant to be more of a comedic piece, where the book is set in a much darker tone. The story is followed closely in the film, only changing some key aspects to modernize the tale. I think that the best quality that the film had was the fact that Paul Rudd wasnt in the movie. Its not that I have anything against him as a person, i just feel like he is a mediocre actor.

Blog post #3: Inquiry 1 Review

My inquiry 1 was based on the second episode of “Once Upon a Time”. I believe that I did a better job at giving a synopsis of the episode than i did giving a close examination of the episode. If I were to rate my performance on a scale from one to ten, I would give myself a seven. In this paper, I decided to focus on what was happening to the characters and how it related to the original texts. I found it the easiest to see the tone of the show, and how the emotions of the characters helped to carry the story line forward. The hardest part to me was drawing some of the allusions from the original texts and linking them to the show itself. I have a familiarity with Disney, but my knowledge is somewhat limited. I did not watch past the second episode myself, but i assume that as the series goes on, the allusions become more great as they add additional characters. I found that the story arch worked rather well, but some of the characters seemed off to me. For instance, Henry isn’t convincing to me. The huntsman (deputy) just seems like a character put into the show to be a love interest for Emma. If I had any advice for someone else who is writing this paper in the future, I would tell them to get a little more familiar with Disney movies and culture so that they could better understand whats happening in the show. I don’t know that I learned much from watching this show, but this paper did help me to better organize my thoughts. I have a very scattered mind for the most part. I don’t believe that I met all the criteria that the paper wanted me to hit. If I had to say what I was missing the most of, it wold be the rhetoric. I had bits of analysis in rhetoric in there, however more would have better met the qualifications.

Blog post number 2

I have decided to watch and write my essay on episode two of season one. The reason I have chosen this episode is because it is the next episode in the series, and I don’t like being dropped into a story without a preface. There are a few other stories that this episode alludes to. For example, in a flashback, the evil queen has decided that she is going to release the dark curse on the people of the forest. She has to ride to go see Maleficent, who is the main antagonist in the Disney film “Sleeping Beauty”. I’m not sure if this allusion is correct, but I believe that one of Cinderella’s evil step sisters makes an appearance around the fire. I believe this is her because in the original story, as punishment for tormenting Cinderella, they are cursed with crows that come and peck out their eyes. Around the fire there is an evil woman with her eyes sewn shut. In addition to these appearances, I had originally thought that the shrink was supposed to be one of the owners of the 101 dalmatians, since he was walking one in episode one. This turns out to not be the case, since when Henry is talking with him he says “Is that why you think I’m Jiminy Cricket?”, referring to his lucky umbrella. The thing that stuck out to me the most was the tone of the episode. Much like the first episode, the tone of this episode is slightly sinister yet still “family friendly”.

I don’t hate this woman, but I really hate her character.

Hi, I’m Chris.

My full name is Christopher Damion Scheid, which is a serious oxymoron. The name Christopher is derived from Greek, meaning “bearing Christ”, and Damion is the name of the Antichrist in “The Omen”. I promise I am not the Antichrist. I am 18 years old and I was born at good Samaritan hospital in Cincinnati. I enjoy spending time with friends, playing magic, and gaming. I also enjoy boxing and swimming. The first game that I ever played was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, I was roughly 3 when I started, and it is still my favorite classic game. Playing games was pretty much what my mother and I would do together, so that really brought us closer together. As I grew older, so did my taste in games. I eventually focused more on puzzle type games such as Half-Life and Portal. I also moved away from console gaming and started to focus my attention more to computer gaming. In fact, I am currently building my own gaming computer. If my blog seems short, it’s mostly because I don’t really like talking about myself. I much prefer to hear about others. I already know me, so over analysis of myself I just find rather dull. I really enjoy spending time with my friends and have a very close group of friends. I see them as an extension of my family and I care deeply for them. I am very open to making new friends though, and welcome any new friendships I make while in this class. The picture that I have decided to attach is a picture of Reggie. He has not a whole lot to do with me, other than the fact that he works with Nintendo, but I think that his face is just the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.
